Denison High School continues to rank among the best high schools in the nation, this time for the 17th year in a row, according to the highly respected U.S. News and World Report’s recently released data on the quality of education in America’s high schools.

Locally, in what the report defines as the “Sherman, TX Metro Area Rankings,” Denison High School (student population 1,323 in grades 9-12) earned the coveted top spot among the area’s larger high schools with a graduation rate of 95%, a college readiness rating of 24.7, and solid scores on state mandated tests in core subject areas as well as other data.

According to the report, Denison High School also ranked high in the top tier of public schools across the state, earning a ranking of 417 out of nearly 3,000 public schools in Texas. Denison’s national ranking for 2022 was 4,993 out of more than 24,000 public high schools across the entire nation, indicating that Denison’s award-winning teachers have met the challenges imposed by the two-plus year Covid pandemic.

Schools were ranked based on their performance on a diverse slate of stringent guidelines, including state-required tests, graduation rates, and how well they prepare students for college. Regarding proficiency on STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness), Denison High School as well as the Denison ISD district as a whole met or exceeded statewide averages in all three major subjects including mathematics, reading and science.

“It’s just phenomenal that our teachers and students continue to achieve top-tier state and national rankings year after year…a testament to the high quality of instruction, curriculum planning, diverse course and program offerings, staff development, student-centered focus, family involvement and overall support provided for each and every student, academically and personally, at every grade level,” said DISD Superintendent Dr. David Kirkbride. “I am honored and privileged to be a part of this school district and the school-community partnerships that work together constantly to make our schools and students so incredibly successful. We have a culture here in Denison that is very special and unique… one that values the gifts, talents, needs, abilities and potential of each and every child.”
